The Hauorani community, as revealed by Oxford and Bish (45), is composed of five groups which include; the Tagaeri, the Huinatare, the Onamenane, and the two groups of the Taromenane.
According to Otero Ziegler, the Huaorani people believe that the whole world was once a forest and hence they consider the forest as their home while the outside world is considered as very unsafe (152). It is believed by this community that the aspect of living in the forest offered protection from witchcraft and other attacks from their enemies. Just like many of the hunters and gatherers, the forest and rivers are considered as the most significant aspect in life among the Huaorani. Scholars who have studied the Huaorani community have put forward that, animals and plants according to the beliefs of this community have a spiritual as well as a physical existence (Rival 51). Animals despite the fact that they are hunted in this community are heavily respected because it is believed that when people die they return to earth as animals and more specifically termites (Oxford & Bish 45). Hunting is the main mode of subsistence of this community but it is still believed that the spirits of the dead animals have to be appeased otherwise they will cause harm to the humans. In their hunting practices, they put a lot of considerations in snakes and jaguar. Women, on the other hand, were known as gatherers of fruits and hunters of small animals.
